Governor to Honor WWII Hero Pedro Cano At Ceremony in Edinburg

Edinburg - WWII hero Pedro Cano will be posthumously honored with the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor at a ceremony in Edinburg on May 18, 2010.  State Representative Aaron Peña has announced that Governor Rick Perry will present the medal to the family of Pedro Cano at the Edinburg Municipal Auditorium at 3:00 p.m.  Rep. Peña authored HCR 5, the legislation that conferred the medal to the Edinburg soldier for heroic acts performed in service of country.

"The State of Texas has recognized the bravery of this unassuming solider from Edinburg," said Rep. Peña. "For many in our community the memory of Pedro Cano was lost in the name of streets and schools…

The Texas Legislative Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration that may be awarded by the State of Texas.  It is designated by a concurrent resolution of the Legislature.  It is awarded to a member of the state or federal military forces who voluntarily performs a deed of personal bravery or self-sacrifice involving risk of life that is so conspicuous as to clearly distinguish the person for gallantry and intrepidity.

Pedro Cano earned our nation's second highest military decoration, the Distinguished Service Cross, for his heroism in WWII.  Cano was presented the medal at a ceremony in Edinburg's town square on April 26, 1946.  Thousands of residents witnesses the event.  Tragically, Cano's life ended six years later after dying in a head on collision in Pharr.

REP. VERONICA GONZALES APPOINTED TO NATIONAL HOMELAND SECURITY TASK FORCE

April 19, 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Ricardo Lopez-Guerra

PRESS RELEASE: REP. VERONICA GONZALES APPOINTED TO NATIONAL HOMELAND SECURITY TASK FORCE

AUSTIN---State Representative Veronica Gonzales has been appointed by House Speaker Joe Straus to the National Conference of State Legislators' Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Taskforce. This leadership position will provide Gonzales valuable insight into the security and preparedness practices used around the country to implement the best ideas in Texas.

"Living along the border has its own unique challenges," said Gonzales, Chair of the House Committee on Border and Intergovernmental Affairs. "I am honored to serve on this task force as it has a direct correlation with the committee I chair and the interim charge from Speaker Joe Straus to determine the effectiveness of state operations at controlling drug related crime and other violence along the Texas-Mexico border."

The Border and Intergovernmental Affairs Committee oversees the state's relations with Mexico and state and federal agencies.

The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) is a bipartisan organization that provides research, assistance and policy exchanging opportunities for legislators in all 50 states. NCSL also advocates for the interests of state governments before Congress and federal agencies.  The taskforce is the center of NCSL's activities on homeland security and emergency preparedness and is used to assist 12-standing committees in developing positions on highly complex and controversial issues such as immigration, education and welfare reform. In June, the task force will meet in Michigan to examine northern border security efforts with Canada.

"I am pleased to appoint Representative Veronica Gonzales to the NCSL Task Force on Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness," Speaker Straus said. "As Chairwoman of the House Committee on Border and Intergovernmental Affairs, she will provide a valued Texas perspective."

Rio Grande Valley Wave

This is one of our first Waves for the Rio Grande Valley. We built it soon after Google Wave was released. I had meant to post it; but we could not figure out how.

I'm sure there may be other RGV Waves by now. There are 24 people contributing to this one who may have launched another.

Some Housekeeping at RGV Life

A while back when RGV Life first started, blogging was all the craze. Many of the blogs were political in nature, offering commentary on the state of local politics. There were some heated discussions. Even local politicians were setting up blogs so that they could reach constituents directly.

I've gone and reviewed the links on RGV Life to be sure that they are still good. Unfortunately, many of the sites have been shut down. Even sadder, many blogs have not been touched in 2 or 3 years, back in the heyday of RGV blogging.

It saddens me that many of the blogs have faded over the years. I'm not sure what caused the declining interest in writing blogs. I wish I could do something to revive the blogger community.

So, anyway, I've deleted links to websites that are gone or no longer active. If you would like to have your Rio Grande Valley blog or website listed, send me an email to rgvlife@gmail.com for consideration.
