The Bentsen - Rio Grande Valley State Park and World Birding Center will host their annual Perseid Meteor Shower Viewing on August 11, 2012 from 8 pm to midnight. The event takes place of their weekly Creatures of the Night program, which will be canceled that night.
Last year's Perseid meteor shower viewing received approximately 1,200 participants. The program consisted of a tram ride to several stations within the park, which had family activities geared to educate the public about South Texas wildlife. There is also a tour up to a watch tower that oversees the resacas from above the treeline. From there, the park rangers can locate and illuminate bats that are in the area, in addition to other wildlife.
It is recommended that visitors have some mosquito repellent and a bottled water handy. There is some hiking through wooded areas involved in the tour; sensible shoes are a definite must-have. A small flashlight is helpful, especially when going through the wooded areas. The park will also sell glow bracelets and necklaces, which are a good idea for keeping track of your young ones.
