PRESS RELEASE: REP. VERONICA GONZALES APPOINTED TO NATIONAL HOMELAND SECURITY TASK FORCE

AUSTIN---State Representative Veronica Gonzales has been appointed by House Speaker Joe Straus to the National Conference of State Legislators' Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Taskforce. This leadership position will provide Gonzales valuable insight into the security and preparedness practices used around the country to implement the best ideas in Texas.

"Living along the border has its own unique challenges," said Gonzales, Chair of the House Committee on Border and Intergovernmental Affairs. "I am honored to serve on this task force as it has a direct correlation with the committee I chair and the interim charge from Speaker Joe Straus to determine the effectiveness of state operations at controlling drug related crime and other violence along the Texas-Mexico border."

The Border and Intergovernmental Affairs Committee oversees the state's relations with Mexico and state and federal agencies.

The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) is a bipartisan organization that provides research, assistance and policy exchanging opportunities for legislators in all 50 states. NCSL also advocates for the interests of state governments before Congress and federal agencies.  The taskforce is the center of NCSL's activities on homeland security and emergency preparedness and is used to assist 12-standing committees in developing positions on highly complex and controversial issues such as immigration, education and welfare reform. In June, the task force will meet in Michigan to examine northern border security efforts with Canada.

"I am pleased to appoint Representative Veronica Gonzales to the NCSL Task Force on Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness," Speaker Straus said. "As Chairwoman of the House Committee on Border and Intergovernmental Affairs, she will provide a valued Texas perspective."
