Speaker series highlights women in business, technology

For decades, men were the dominant figures in the business and
technology fields, but the past 20 years has changed all that,
especially with the dawn of a new century. Now South Texas College's
Business Administration Department is lauding the efforts of Rio
Grande Valley business women through a new speaker series highlighting
how they have broken the glass ceiling to become very successful
business owners.

"Women have tended to stay away from our department because they
believe that certain jobs are meant for men and not women and they
couldn't more be wrong," said Roz Moore, STC business administration
instructor. "We are holding this speaker series to show female
students that anything is possible, despite gender. We are
highlighting very successful Valley women to show that you don't have
to work at a Fortune 500 company in another city to be a successful
entrepreneur."

The first panel discussion in the Women in Business and Technology
series took place in early February at the college's Technology
Campus. Yvonne Lim, owner of Bounce Inflatable Fun, gave a brief
history on how she entered the business world and encouraged women in
the audience to pursue their dreams.

Lim explained to the audience that "in order to make in business you
need a have an idea, lots of research, and that the biggest challenge
is trying to balance everything together such as family and a business
life."

The next session in the series takes place on March 2, when Cassandra
Moreno of Edward Jones and Monica Garcia from Kidz Crusade will make
up the panel. The final session takes place on April 12 with speakers
Sally Cuellar of Coldwell Banker- La Mansion and Lorena Tijerina of
STC's Plumbing Program.

The sessions take place at STC's Technology Campus Auditorium located
at the corner of Ware and Military Highway in McAllen. Attendance is
free and open to the public. For more information contact Roz Moore at

Fall 2024 in the RGV

It's that time of year again when Winter Texans start to make their way south from the northern states. I have already had phone calls with a Winter Texan client who is getting ready to come down. I think it is fascinating that we can make friends from people who are visiting only seasonally.  Looking at the blog stats, I seem to get a peak in traffic every year. So I suppose it must be partly due to many of our friends coming back from up north.  Image generated by Gemini 1.5 Pro AI Speaking of seasons, we still have a couple of months to go before the end of hurricane season for 2024. We have been fortunate this year, compared to other parts of the USA. Although, south Texas could use the rain.  This time of year makes me happy as we finally have nights that are below 78F like we had all summer. This week we have had mornings in the 60s. While we still have hot days in the 90s, we at least get some respite in the evenings, leading to cool mornings.  Returning to RG...

The Mad Mexican

Years ago, there used to be a DJ at B104, a local radio station. Until recent years, B104 had a large audience. They played pop music. The Mad Mexican used to do the morning show with Gary Rodriguez, who is now involved in McAllen politics. Well, the Mad Mexican is still working, but on a national level. I heard him this morning on Aguila, XM 92. Aguila is the Mexican music station on XM Satellite Radio. It's great to hear from him again. He's still pretty wild. Gary Rodriguez? He worked for 107.9 for a while before going to KURV and then entering politics.
