Mission CISD Cold Weather Notice to Parents

Dear Parent/Guardian,
As you may have heard, the National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting the arrival of unusually cold weather for our area. A special weather statement issued by them on Tuesday, January 5 indicated a cold front to arrive during the mid-morning hours of Thursday, January 7. Temperatures are expected to decrease during the day on Thursday. The NWS advises residents to prepare for the possibility of a freeze Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Mission CISD is taking precautions in advance of this weather event to make sure our buildings and vehicles will be safe and warm for our students and staff. Plans are also in place to address possible rerouting of buses should one or two routes be impacted by conditions. District officials will continue to monitor the forecasts and weather conditions, especially overnight Thursday. Should a school closure be required, the district will make the announcement as early as possible that night/early Friday morning. Any announcement made regarding this issue would be given to local media (TV and radio). Announcements would also be posted on the district's website: www.mcisd.net, through the district's Facebook page and Twitter. At this time (Wed. Jan. 6) we are planning for a normal school-day schedule on Friday.

The NWS and Centers for Disease Control also have the following recommendations:
  • Be careful with the use of electric space heaters indoors
  • Use fireplace, wood stoves or other combustion heaters only if they are properly vented to the outside and do not leak flue gas into the indoor air space
  • Ensure adequate ventilation if you must use a kerosene heater
  • Do not place a space heater within 3 feet of anything that may catch on fire, such as drapes, furniture, or bedding
  • Never cover a space heater
  • Never place a space heater on top of furniture or near water
  • Never leave children unattended near a space heater
  • Avoid using extension cords to plug in a space heater
  • Do not use a space heater that has a damaged electrical cord
  • Protect yourself from carbon monoxide poisoning by never using generators, grills, camp stoves or similar devices indoors
  • Store a multipurpose, dry-chemical fire extinguisher near the area to be heated
  • Dress in layers and wear a hat to prevent heat loss from the head
  • Allow outdoor pets to be able to protect themselves from the cold
  • Outdoor plumbing should be protected from possible damage by the cold
  • Cover sensitive outdoor plants

Fall 2024 in the RGV

It's that time of year again when Winter Texans start to make their way south from the northern states. I have already had phone calls with a Winter Texan client who is getting ready to come down. I think it is fascinating that we can make friends from people who are visiting only seasonally.  Looking at the blog stats, I seem to get a peak in traffic every year. So I suppose it must be partly due to many of our friends coming back from up north.  Image generated by Gemini 1.5 Pro AI Speaking of seasons, we still have a couple of months to go before the end of hurricane season for 2024. We have been fortunate this year, compared to other parts of the USA. Although, south Texas could use the rain.  This time of year makes me happy as we finally have nights that are below 78F like we had all summer. This week we have had mornings in the 60s. While we still have hot days in the 90s, we at least get some respite in the evenings, leading to cool mornings.  Returning to RG...

The Mad Mexican

Years ago, there used to be a DJ at B104, a local radio station. Until recent years, B104 had a large audience. They played pop music. The Mad Mexican used to do the morning show with Gary Rodriguez, who is now involved in McAllen politics. Well, the Mad Mexican is still working, but on a national level. I heard him this morning on Aguila, XM 92. Aguila is the Mexican music station on XM Satellite Radio. It's great to hear from him again. He's still pretty wild. Gary Rodriguez? He worked for 107.9 for a while before going to KURV and then entering politics.
