We waited out the storm in Madero, Tx, a small townlet south of Mission. In our experience, the wind was gusting pretty hard. The rain was not as much as we have experienced in other storms. In other storms, there is "fat rain", which consists of large drops of water. Hurricane Dolly did not have fat rain in our area. There was lots of rain, but it did not cut down visibiity too much.
We spent most of the storm without power. We lost electricity yesterday a bit after noon. As of this post, elec…

As part of the planning for Paragraphs on Padre Blvd. I would appreciate the input of those in the area that will become a part of our literary community. Since, I see this as a community endeavor, your opinions, interests, and ideas are important.
To better understand what the community would like to see in an area bookstore I have prepared an online survey. The results will be used as I begin to finalize my plans.…

I am currently in the process of building a new bookstore and residence on South Padre Island. My goal is to make Paragraphs on Padre Blvd. a community bookshop that will serve the needs of residents on the Island and of the lower Rio Grande Valley.
I would like the store to be a place where writers, readers, and anyone interested in the world of ideas will feel welcome and find something of interest. Hopefully we can sponsor some interesting events and I welcome any small groups who would like…

I've been off the site for a while. I've been busy lately making a transition to my new job at
South Texas Communications. It's a bit of a mixed blessing. I do get to use my skills at the job. On the other hand, I am doing a lot of work outdoors in the heat. We have a big project coming up for the next 30 days, which is mostly outdoors. You can imagine, I'll turn a few shades darker and spend a great deal of time perspirating. Come to think of it, I'll have…

These past few days have been extremely oppressive for me. I can deal with the heat; but when you add humidity in the mix, it becomes unbearable. I don't quite understand what the heat index is about. We had one day this past week when the heat index was 115 degrees. The actual temperature was around 101 degrees. My van does not have a working air conditioner, so I can tell you that it was just de-spiriting to drive. I think that things will be on again, off again with the heat in the coming day…

Lately, I have been experimenting with the reusable shopping bags being offered at HEB and Wal-Mart. I'm not an environmentalist. My biggest reason for avoiding the plastic bags used for groceries, etc is that I have a whole bunch of them at home already. We all reuse our plastic bags to some extent, I imagine. We use them on the small waste baskets rather than buy small trash bags; they are small enough and have handles that make it easy to tie them closed. The problem is that I have a whole bu…

We have heard or read news about how the nation is entering into a recession. There are reports that residential construction has slowed down in the Rio Grande Valley with the tightening of credit. Even with all this, commercial construction and business continues to grow in our region. Unemployment, even with the current economy, is at an impressive low.
I am only 33 years old and grew up mostly in the RGV. I have seen tremendous growth in my little corner of the valley. When I was in high sch…

I understand that Cameron County is ranked as one of the poorest in the nation. But I don't understand how that affects the education system. I really want to know what they teach from elementary through high school. If it is that horrible, they might as well save money and abolish the whole ISDs and pour money into food banks instead.
The reason I say this is because I mentioned the Louisiana Purchase to a coworker. I had just heard that it was signed either in Brownsville, or somewhere in the…

I am a big advocate for the Rio Grande Valley, in general. I will admit, however, that I am not a big fan of the hot weather. The recent record-breaking heat was killing me. Seriously, 100 degree weather in March? Fortunately, it only lasted for one day. I'll be happy if it doesn't happen again until maybe August 31st.

The wind has been rather annoying in the RGV lately. We have had windy days, which is understandable in March. However, when you consider that we have not had rain in some time, the wind has been carrying quite a bit of dust. It's horrible. We have had to close our windows and turn on the air conditioner to keep the dust out of the house. On our front porch, you can see little piles of dust that collect as the wind blows it around. If you open your car doors for very long, or even the windows, y…

Yesterday, we had some record-breaking heat in the Rio Grande Valley. It did not start off too bad until after 2 pm. I believe we had some parts hit 100 degrees. You grow unaccustomed to entering a vehicle that is an oven inside. It took a while for my steering wheel to cool off enough for me to drive comfortably. This was just a preview of the summer that is to come.
Fortunately, today we'll have temps in the low to mid 90s. Although this is warm, there is a world of difference between that an…

There's not been very much happening lately. Just haven't been motivated to do a lot of things other than going to the local animal shelter to check to see if my dog is there. I feel like that guy from Memento- he keeps doing the same things over and over again and one would feel that it's all in vain, but it's the only thing that keeps him going; it's the only thing that holds any purpose to him; to find answers, clues on who killed his wife.
